Biography
Born in 1896 in Mykulintsi (Ivano-Frankivsk region). Graphic artist, art critic, teacher. People’s Artist of the USSR (1944). Full member of the USSR Academy of Arts (1947). Member of the Ukrainian Union of Artists (1937). Hero of Socialist Labor (1974). Laureate of the Taras Shevchenko Republican Prize of the Ukrainian SSR (1964). Laureate of the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR (1971). State awards of the USSR. Graduated from the Prague Academy of Arts (1926). His teacher was M. Shvabinskyi. He worked at the Kyiv Art Institute (with a break): 1944-76 – Head of the Department of Graphic Arts, Professor; in Kharkiv: at the Ukrainian Polygraphic Institute: from 1930 – Head of the Department of Artistic and Technical Book Design; 1937-41 – Head of the Department of Graphics; 1942 – Lecturer at the Ukrainian Department of the Moscow Art Institute (Samarkand, Uzbekistan). Samarkand, Uzbek SSR); 1943-44 – a lecturer at the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (Zagorsk, Russia); Head of the Department of Fine Arts at the Rylsky Institute of Art History, Folklore and Ethnology (Kyiv, 1955-62). Participant of exhibitions since 1923.
