Biography
Born in 1871 in Letychiv (Khmelnytskyi region). Painter, theater artist. Honored Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1936). Honored Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1941). He studied at the Kyiv Drawing School of M. Murashko. Graduated from the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts under the direction of J. Stanislavskyi (1910). He improved his skills in Paris (1910-1912), worked in the studio of A. Matisse (1910). He taught at the Kharkiv Art College and the Kharkiv Art Institute (1925-1931). He became a professor (1927). Researcher of Taras Shevchenko’s artistic heritage. One of the founders of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts, its president (1917-1918). Member of the Society of Kyiv Artists (1912). Participant of exhibitions since 1905.
