Biography
Born in 1904, Vesele (Kharkiv region). Painter, graphic artist. People’s Artist of the USSR (1963), People’s Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1957), Honored Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1943). Corresponding Member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1958). Laureate of the Taras Shevchenko State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR (1969). He was awarded orders and medals of the USSR. Graduated from the Kharkiv Art Institute (1931). Teachers in the specialty: M. Sharonov, M. Burachek, S. Prokhorov, O. Kokel. He taught at this institute (1932-1941; 1947-1948). He was the head of the Kyiv Graphic Workshop of the USSR Academy of Arts (since 1962). He worked as an editor of the publishing house of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine (1942-1944), director of the State Museum of Ukrainian Art (1944-1946), and editor-in-chief of the publishing house “Mystetstvo” (1954-1956). Chairman of the Board of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts (1956-1962). Member of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR (1958-1963). Participant in exhibitions since 1935.
