Biography

Born in 1886 in Moscow (russia). Graphic artist, art critic. People’s Artist of the USSR (1963). Laureate of the Lenin Prize (1962). Academician of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1962; corresponding member 1957). Member of the artistic association “Four Arts” (1924-1928). He studied at the studio of K. Yuon (Moscow, 1903-1905); evening classes in sculpture at the Stroganov School of Art and Industry (1903-1905); the school of S. Kholloshi (Munich, 1906-1907); at the Department of Art History of the University of Munich (1906-1907) and Moscow (1907-1913). Professor at the Higher Art and Technical Workshops (1920-1930), the Higher Art and Technical Institute (1920-1930, rector 1923-1926), the Moscow Polygraphic Institute (1930-1934), the Institute of Fine Arts (1934-1938), and the Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts (1942-1948).
