Biography
Born in 1886 in Khmelnytskyi. Graphic artist, painter. People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1962). Honored Artist of the USSR (1964). Laureate of the State Prize of the USSR (1946). Full member of the USSR Academy of Arts (1949). He studied at the Kharkiv private studio of E. Schrader (1895; 1900-1904), the New Art Workshop in St. Pietierburg (1913-1916) under the guidance of B. Kustodiev, A. Ostroumova-Liebiedieva, E. Lanser, M. Dobuzhynskii. Graduated from the Law Faculty of St. Petersburg University (1912). Worked in the St. Pietierburg magazine Teatr i iskusstvo (1912-1916), Ermitazh (1918-1930). Professor of the Department of the History of Engraving at the Pietrograd Free Art and Training Workshops (1921-1923). Participated in exhibitions since 1915. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and medals.
