Lived and worked in Kyiv.

“Leonid Vartyvanov’s artistic trajectory was uneven, saturated with anxious yet persistent searches for new tools, contexts, and idioms. The canvas and paint alone were not enough for him; he created collages, stencils, graphic works, spatial installations, and reliefs. He expressed himself by finding a new form every time and never returning to it, which is why during his short life he did not have time to establish a single recognizable style,” writes art historian and curator Kseniia Malykh.

From the 1990s onward, he was preoccupied with questions of artistic mastery and the intrinsic value of painting itself. Of particular note during the first phase of his practice are the monumental paintings created while still a third-year student at the institute as a resident of the Parkommuna squat. During this period, the artist engaged in experiments with diverse techniques and art forms (graphic, sculptural), turning to mass media, Pop Art, cinema, and advertising. “Vartyvanov tested new forms of artistic language, replacing conventional brushes and oil with cardboard, paper, fabric, and metal” (Olesia Avramenko).
