Lives and works in Kyiv.
Starting in the 1980s, Panych began developing a distinct visual vocabulary, utilizing single-figure monumental compositions with low horizon lines, embracing an expressional style, and moving toward “hypertrophied sociality” (Valeriy Sakharuk). An absence of irony and a “sin of seriousness” — to borrow Konstantin Akinsha’s apt phrase — constitute the primary characteristic of Serhiy Panych’s work. “Where irony seems obvious, it is absent. Instead, religious and biblical reminiscences and philosophical reflections on the world emerge” (Tetiana Zhmurko). According to Olesia Avramenko, Serhiy Panych “longed for a monastic life.” The artist thinks in series and cycles, characterized by an obsession with an idea.
