A representative of the Ukrainian New Wave, Bohuslavskyi found a natural stylistic alignment with European postmodern aesthetics: “The formal aesthetics of European postmodernism, with its refined geometricized and decorative pursuits, found a receptive adherent in Volodymyr Bohuslavskyi. A system otherwise overly dry and rational offered the artist a unique opportunity to immerse himself in his own ethereal, hermetic world—isolated from the cataclysms and disappointments of real life. Meanwhile, the citational nature of postmodernism allowed him to appeal to time-tested subjects of world classics, adapting them to a contemporary alphabet of artistic codes and symbols” (Natalia Kosmolinska).

Bohuslavskyi actively manifested his postmodern form-giving aesthetics as early as the 1980s, creating stylized narrative canvases with exquisite landscapes and still lifes in which expressive colors harmoniously blend with delicate detail and meticulously balanced stylization. The artist draws upon timeless motifs; his canvases are filled with vast space and air. Color plays the central role—especially blue, which embodies spatiality, serenity, and harmony, “capturing the fleeting moment of life.” Beyond the blue lie layers of meaning, the unexplored, the transcendent, and the artist’s profound philosophical reflections.

The artist’s works represent “a polylogue between the objective surrounding world and subjective inner realms. Concentration, contemplation, and silence serve as the artist’s tools toward a goal wherein he seeks to find a golden mean between life and art. Within the conditional, shimmering sun-and-moonlight of his landscapes and still lifes, the banality of reality is transformed into philosophical metaphors belonging to humanity’s eternal meditations on the meaning of existence and the true scale of values” (Natalia Kosmolinska). Possessing features of abstract compositions with pronounced emotional and psychological tension, his paintings are built upon contrasts of color, mass, and space.
