Information about the work
The theme of motherhood also remains a constant in Krasna’s work. Her children and grandchildren have become the subjects of her portraits and genre scenes. The painting Maryna [Maryna] (canvas, oil, 1983, transferred to the Khmelnytskyi Regional Art Museum collection by the Directorate of Art Exhibitions of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine in 1986) is precisely about motherhood. Maryna is the artist’s daughter, depicted here inside her mother’s studio—a poignant setting, as she would go on to continue the family dynasty and become an artist herself. Executed in a realistic manner with a precisely balanced composition, the piece demonstrates high painterly culture and a masterful ability to convey the sitter’s psychological state. The vibrant color palette heightens the emotional mood of a childhood that was joyful, spontaneous, and creative. Growing up in a family of artists—spending time with parents in their studios amidst artworks and art supplies—proved decisive for many painters in choosing their future path.
