Works and lives in Kyiv.

Haiane Ataian’s work belongs to the movement of “quiet painting” [tykhyi zhyvopys] —a realistic style infused with Impressionist influences. Her lyrical landscapes are imbued with melancholy, warmth, and tenderness, while her still lifes evoke a fascination with nature and an awareness of its fragility. Her mother, the artist and educator Tetiana Yablonska, exerted a profound influence on her artistic development, particularly during her early period. Ataian synthesizes the legacy of her parents, the rigorous discipline of her academic training, and her own innate talent as a painter with a nuanced understanding of color and form. Some of her works were executed effortlessly en plein air, while others were meticulously refined over years in her legendary studio—a space previously occupied by Fedir Krychevskyi, Oleksiy Shovkunenko, and Tetiana Yablonska.

Distinguishing her spontaneous plein-air studies from her meditated studio compositions is a challenge: all of her paintings are luminous, kinetic, vibrating, and elusive, yet simultaneously textured, tactile, vital, and almost tangible. Her native Kyiv—the “city in a park”—serves as the primary subject of her oeuvre, influencing her characteristic framing: the capital’s architecture emerges through a web of interwoven branches and foliage in nearly every composition.
