Destruction of the national pattern

Destruction of the national pattern

Information about the work

The title of the work Destruction of the National Pattern [Ruynuvannya natsionalnoho vizerunku] (canvas, oil, mixed media, 1992, gifted to the Khmelnytskyi Regional Art Museum collection by the author in 2016) directly guides the interpretation of the canvas. The artist confronts the critical issue of preserving cultural heritage and spirituality—touching upon national identity in the modern world and the preservation of historical memory. He urges us to pause and reflect on who we are, where we are heading, and what awaits us if we do not cease the destruction of culture and faith, or if we forget our roots. Humenchuk reveals the essence of the work by placing a torn ornamental band at the center of the composition. The canvas is deeply philosophical and national in character, crying out: what are you doing—stop. Yet, the light color palette still hints at rebirth and spiritual renewal. Among the mixed materials, the artist utilizes rope, thread, and burlap.

Oil on canvas, mixed technique.
