Lives and works in Odesa.

Art historian Tetyana Basanets, the artist’s wife, notes that even at the beginning of his creative journey, Basanets’s art “carried clearly articulated artistic and, above all, stylistic ideas. Over time, these systematically grew more complex. In what seemed like a traditionally homogeneous painterly system, unusual color nuances suddenly emerged, dismantling the ‘realism’ of images to create an environment abstracted from concrete life—a space where man, as the artist himself observes, ‘…by gazing and listening, perceives and absorbs the enchantment of the spiritual realm, while in turn offering his own spirituality to his surroundings.’ The power of Basanets’s works, their gravity, paired with a complex painting technique, lies in their indirect influence on the viewer. The content of his works is not deciphered instantly; it compels one to catch the meaning, discerning it through specific cues: the gestures of characters, the enigmatic expression of faces, and the conventionality of the landscape background.”

Valeriy Basanets is one of the bright representatives of the Odesa school of painting. His works—whether painting, graphic art, or sculpture—are always recognizable thanks to his distinct, highly individual artistic voice. Even his early pieces are distinct, though executed in a dark palette with an atypical sense of drama. It is worth noting that the artist’s creative persona took shape during an era dominated by Socialist Realism, the sole method sanctioned by the Soviet regime. Yet, Basanets persistently sought his own path in art, and his works never fitted within the rigid confines of official dogma. Consequently, he became an active participant in underground “apartment” exhibitions.

Valeriy Basanets: “Painting is a sanctuary for visual images and impressions… It is the territory of an idealized, enchanted world…”
