Biography
Born in 1864, Vyshnipil (Cherkasy region). Painter, graphic artist. People’s Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1951). Member of the Association of Artists of Red Ukraine, the Ukrainian Academy of Fine Arts (1938). He studied at the icon painting school of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra (1876-1879) and the Kyiv Drawing School of M. Murashko (1882-1884), teachers: H. Platonov and I. Selezniov. He studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1884-1888), his teachers were A. Kuindzhi and I. Repin. He taught at the icon-painting school of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra (1905-1907), secondary schools in Kyiv (1919-1932). He worked as an illustrator for the Niva magazine (until 1917). Participated in exhibitions since 1891.
