Information about the work
In the painting Composition [Kompozytsiya] (canvas, oil, 1996, gifted to the Khmelnytskyi Regional Art Museum collection by the author in 1998), Anatoliy Kryvolap applies striped, textured rhythms—his signature plastic language. The work was created during the period when the artist was still part of the Zhyvopysnyi Zapovidnyk [Artistic Preserve] creative association, whose goal was to explore Neoplasticism and the nature of abstract painting.
The color on the canvas seems to compel the painted horizontal forms to move. They resemble multicolored film stills that leave a distinct trace in our subconscious—sometimes crisp, at other times barely perceptible. The artist employs another characteristic technique: the multi-layering of color planes with subtle nuancing. He contrasts a massive, solid ochre plane with smaller spots organized into stripes, driving the dynamic energy of the composition. Kompozytsiya stands as a benchmark of the author’s painterly culture. Anatoliy Kryvolap remains confident: “Painting has been and will remain the supreme art. Because music plays and vanishes, cinema is watched and finishes, but a painting remains before your eyes. Every brushstroke is an encoded author.”
