The painting Woman Walking Through a Village [Zhinka, shcho yde selom] (masonite, oil, 1993, acquired for the Khmelnytskyi Regional Art Museum collection from the artist’s family in 2015) is a stylized depiction of a woman in motion. Its plastic language and color palette evoke both Cubism and medieval monumental sacred art. The woman is indeed passing through a village: low on the horizon, one can barely discern rural cottages sunken into the earth. Translucent, ornamented sign-symbols hover around her figure. Where is this sorrowful, barefoot beauty heading? What rests upon her shoulders—a heavy sack, or a difficult fate? The author offers no definitive answer. Instead, he poses questions that invite the viewer into philosophical contemplation.
