Female portrait

Information about the work

Regarding portraits, Roman Zhuk completely abandons realistic or psychological portraiture in the classical sense of the word. The faces of his figures are markedly idealized, at times reminiscent of porcelain Venetian carnival masks. These are portraits of people—relatives, friends, women—not always beautiful, but always possessing a distinctive gaze or facial expression. […] The gaze of the model in Female Portrait [Zhinochyi Portret] (canvas, oil, 1988) does not confront the viewer openly; it seems to pass through them, leaving behind a sense of distance. The canvas does not ‘tell a story’ about the person, but creates an atmosphere of their unutterable internal presence. The absence of a detailed context concentrates attention on the plasticity of the hands, the tilt of the shoulders, the oval of the face, the interaction between warm and cold shades of red, and the soft, diffused light. Color in the work fulfills a conceptual rather than a descriptive function: red here is not decorative—it is total, almost absolute, akin to a medium. The face is devoid of obvious facial expressions, yet this very restraint creates a powerful psychological magnetism. The artist seems to strive not to capture the person, but to convey their state of presence within an emotional space. Missing here is traditional portraiture ‘sociality’: there are no attributes of status, environment, or role. There is only the human being and their inner state.

All of Zhuk’s works are distinct, yet all are instantly recognizable: they are distinguished by a singular artistic signature. The space of his paintings is a dimension where objects and figures are torn from their real-life, everyday contexts. Traditional genres of still life, landscape, or portraiture undergo transformation, while objects lose their utilitarian function to become symbolic signs. His visual language provokes the viewer to seek hidden meanings and incites personal interpretation.”
