Lesia Zaiats, artist, curator of the project: “This exhibition is an attempt to briefly cover Hnylytskyi’s creative range. The formal approach is called mix&match. By grouping early and late works in pairs, an unforeseen dialog emerges – between one and the other palette, one and the other motif, one time or another.
The exhibition biography of Hnylytskyi (1987-2009) is not quite symmetrically divided into the 20th and 21st centuries. We only conditionally divide it into early and late. Because 23 productive years, the artist’s entire oeuvre, are probably not only phases, but also broader (methodological?) layers that are worth exploring. As Kateryna Stukalova once put it: “…his work is extremely diverse, but also extremely consistent”.
Any ONE work works in its own way. And TWO works already reveal something BETWEEN: aesthetic pleasure in harmony or contrast, discursive space… This retrospective invites us to take a closer look at the consistent and the different in Hnylytskyi’s creative practice.
