Kramatorsk, Sloviansk, Bakhmut, Sviatohirsk, Druzhkivka…
What do we know about these cities, the terrible news about which has been spreading in the media lately? The cities that are being targeted by the Russian occupation regime every day. The cities whose residents have known what war is personally not since February 24, 2022, but since 2014. Cities that are now on the front line of fire, but are keeping the defense of Ukraine, which is on the verge of its 31st anniversary of restoration of Independence, by all possible and impossible means.
Kramatorsk, Sloviansk, Bakhmut, Sviatohirsk, Druzhkivka…
Most Ukrainians would probably answer unequivocally that this is the East of Ukraine, unknown, harsh, and industrialized, thus continuing to develop the Soviet narrative of dividing our country into East and West.
We, the warriors of the cultural front, believe that in the midst of this bloody war, our new history is being forged, in which the period of postcolonial syndrome will finally end and our country will become a powerful state. It is Ukrainian culture that is at the forefront of this cruel and fateful war, and it is the culture that is primarily targeted by the Russians.
Therefore, in such difficult times, we are proud to invite you to a representative exhibition of works by artists from Donetsk region “East. Level of Freedom”, which our museum organized together with the Donetsk Regional Art Museum (Kramatorsk) with the support of the NGO “Everything will be fine”. The project aims to acquaint visitors with the works of artists who were born in Donbas at different times, but due to socio-political circumstances were forced to leave their native land, but continued to make art.
We, the museum workers, firmly believe that the long-awaited Victory Day will come, after which every citizen living in different parts of Ukraine will identify themselves as Ukrainians.
