Exhibition project “BAZAR”
Paintings, collage, objects
11 July 2024 - 18 August 2024

Khmelnytskyi Regional Museum of Art is the first state museum of contemporary art in Ukraine. In line with the focus of the collection and the status of a contemporary art platform, we support and exhibit innovative and experimental exhibition projects. In particular, those that explore the peculiarities of the local environment with the help of artistic tools. The exhibition project “BAZAR” curated by Olesia Shevchuk is an initiative that supports and offers to work through collective complexes of inferiority, memory, and experience rather than ignoring them. Public discussion platforms are planned as part of the exhibition.

Olesia Shevchuk, project curator:
“The Khmelnytskyi Market is a space where the spirit of the city was formed in the 1990s. The main idea of this project is to reflect cultural diversity, history, and everyday life through the prism of the clothing market in Khmelnytskyi, to record the collective experience and memory of the market’s role in the development of the local community.
Any market is a space that is physical, material, and mental, with social, economic, and cultural components. It can serve as a resource for everyone. The project can be viewed from different perspectives: business, family, relationships, recycling, ecology, and a city marker.
The implementation of the market-based art exhibition covers a wide range of topics, each of which encourages unique perspectives and deep reflections. The exhibition reflects the diversity, dynamics and cultural significance of the market through various media that reflect the symbolism and aesthetics of the bazar.
The aim of the exhibition was to create conditions for a multifaceted participatory experience for the viewers, to move from one space to another. This exhibition is about the culture of community participation in a common space, a call to the community to co-create, and a dialogue between audiences that have not previously intersected closely.
The history of Khmelnytskyi Market is more than 30 years of development that has taken place in parallel with the development of the city and the community. It grew with us, changed, and created jobs. This exhibition represents us in a way. The community needs to preserve and analyse its own unique experience.”
