In her paintings, Svitlana Melnychuk does not recreate the plots of events, no matter how disturbing they may be. On the contrary, the artist wants her works to distract the viewer from problems, to encourage reflection and emotion, to fill them with joy and love, to awaken a sense of life, to make them go beyond the usual everyday life. Although the artist has a non-figurative work, painted on the eve of the outbreak of a full-scale war with Russia, with a dominant red palette and an alarming accumulation of forms – “Drama under the Sun, or Premonition” (2022), which testifies to deep experiences and a sense of the reality of life.
An irrepressible desire to paint in oils appeared during her first pregnancy. Over time, this desire did not disappear, but strengthened. So she studied at the private art studio of the artist, member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine Edward Miliar, where she met like-minded people.
The artist works with saturated active colors, and with the beginning of the large-scale invasion, the desire to use this palette became even more acute. At first, she creates a lot of sketches, and only then does she start working on the canvas. Of the variety of movements and trends in the visual arts, the closest to Svitlana is abstraction, which she associates with freedom. The artist says that she came to abstraction consciously.
Today, along with abstract paintings and works with elements of figurativeness, the exhibition features portrait images, including a self-portrait. The painting “Self-portrait. Rose”, the artist’s focused gaze shows that her creative search continues. The artist experiments, is in active search of her own “I” in art and encourages others to create.
