Information about the work
The painting I’ll Take Tanya to Sleep… [Ponesu ya Tanyu spaty…] (oil on canvas, 1985; acquired for the Khmelnytskyi Regional Art Museum collection directly from the artist in 1988) reflects the strange and mysterious world of childhood, where play is perceived as reality. Depicting a solemn girl with a doll—the artist’s daughter—in motion, he constructs an illuminated diagonal of favorite toys behind her shoulders. A masterful synthesis of deep colors echoing Old Master painting, nearly abstract, vibrating painterly planes in the foreground and background, and the contrast of chiaroscuro evoke a sense of elusive mysticism. Indeed, this is one of the key canvases with which Serhiy Panych made a resounding mark.
