Biography
Serhiy Ihorovych Panych (b. 1958, Luhansk) is a painter. His father was Ihor Vasylovych Panych (1919–1990), an Honored Artist of Ukraine; his brother is Volodymyr Panych (b. 1960), an artist.
1977 – Graduated from the Luhansk State Art College.
1983 – Graduated from the Kyiv State Art Institute.
1983–2004 – Active participation in art exhibitions. 2001 – Participant in the “First Ukrainian Project” at the 49th Venice Biennale.
1988 – Member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine.
1988–1989 – Participant in the creative residency and member of the informal Sedniv Group at the House of Creativity of the Union of Artists, village of Sedniv, Chernihiv region.
2021 – The artist’s 1992 work was included in the group exhibition Contemporary Ukrainian Art. 30×30, marking the 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence (curated by Valeriy Sakharuk).
Lives in Kyiv.
Serhiy Panych belongs to the generation of artists whose work was forged in the second half of the 1980s, during a period of global rethinking of Soviet reality and the democratization of society. After completing his formal academic education, the artist initially worked in a traditional manner. For a certain period, he lacked both a studio and commissions. However, through persistent experimentation, he sought his own visual formula. His efforts met with success in 1987 at the republican exhibition Youth of the Country, where his painting Hra [The Game] aroused significant interest. The canvas dynamically depicts a man playing with a dog, serving as a personal challenge to the established canons of realistic art.
Participation in the Sedniv residencies played a pivotal role in the young artist’s creative path. There, he worked alongside artists associated with the “New Wave” (Nova Khvylia), who turned to contemporary international trends and ultimately gave rise to a distinctive variant of Ukrainian postmodern art. During six weeks of intensive work in Sedniv, Panych produced a series of canvases reflecting on social life and exploring global philosophical categories. His works are characterized by expression, dynamic movement, emotional tension, and sincerity.
Art historian Iryna Sazonenko notes: “Serhiy expresses all his thoughts, feelings, and emotions through one or two human figures, for to him, only man remains the primary protagonist in the drama of life. The image concentrates moral and philosophical categories within itself; ideas and moods condense within it. Hence the economical narrative action—a meeting, a wait, a quest, a moment of truth. The role of a gesture, a step, or a gaze is akin to a meaningful act.” Regrettably, the artist’s last solo exhibition of new works took place in 2004, and Serhiy Panych has barely worked since.
