Biography

Serhiy (Huseyn-Jafari) Mamedovych Hulshani (1936, Pahlavi, Iran – 2024, Germany) was a painter and graphic artist.

1963 – Relocated to Khmelnytskyi.

From 1970 – Participant in art exhibitions.

From 1995 – Member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine.

In 2011 – Emigrated to Germany.

Hulshani was unable to complete his higher education, as political turmoil in Iran forced his family to emigrate to Azerbaijan. While receiving his Soviet passport in Baku, Huseyn-Jafari Hulshani was assigned the name Serhiy. Since the artist’s mother hailed from the Penza Governorate, the family initially settled in her homeland. Later, Serhiy moved to Khmelnytskyi—his wife’s hometown—where, as the artist often reflected, he always felt most inspired to work.

Serhiy Hulshani’s repertoire encompasses numerous portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and narrative compositions. His oeuvre synthesizes three distinct cultures: Eastern, Ukrainian, and European, heavily influenced by his Iranian instructors, who were educated in the European visual arts tradition. Color plays a pivotal role in his works, characterized by striking combinations of contrasting hues and an expressive execution style. The portrait gallery created by Hulshani is distinguished by deep psychological acuity, with a marked preference for unexpected, dynamic angles. Throughout his career, the artist frequently revisited native Iranian themes, infusing them with internal tension, lyricism, and dramatic power. His nudes are depicted with tenderness—at times uninhibited, occasionally provocative. Across his compositions, Hulshani demonstrates exquisite draftsmanship and a steadfast allegiance to modernism. “The most important thing in art,” the artist maintained, “is love, which gives wings to the painter, provides inspiration, and reveals the infinite diversity concealed within nature and life itself.”
