A young woman

A young woman

Information about the work

The painting Young Woman [Moloda zhinka] (canvas, oil, 1986, gifted to the Khmelnytskyi Regional Art Museum collection by the author in 2011) was created during the height of Socialist Realism, an era when the nude model was painted almost exclusively by art students for instructional purposes. Depicting the unclothed human form in the USSR was largely taboo, rarely permitted outside works dedicated to athletics or classical mythology.

The canvas depicts a nude woman in a candid pose. One can confidently assume that the model posed in the artist’s Khmelnytskyi studio. Although generalized and stripped of superfluous detail, the figure radiates a powerful erotic energy, heightened by a refined color palette and dynamic brushwork. Stylistically, the painting echoes the art of French Post-Impressionists, notably Henri Matisse and Paul Gauguin. The artist renders chiaroscuro through juxtaposed color patches—a technique central to his painterly idiom.

Oil on canvas. 70 х 68.
