In the early 1990s, Lev Markosyan and Marko Heyko were regarded as the founders of the contemporary Poltava school of painting. A prominent representative of the “New Wave” movement, Markosyan was closely affiliated with the artistic circle of the Zhyvopysny Zapadovnyk [Artistic Preserve] alliance and participated in several of their exhibition projects. He enriched Ukrainian painting with exceptional color vibrancy and intricate rhythmics, executing his canvases using a complex multi-layered technique. His work reflects the subtle influence of Eastern cultures, backed by a capacity for deep figurative and philosophical thought. The artist considers his paintings to be an “artifact of his existence.”
