Information about the work
The exhibition features the painting Autumn Light [Osinnye svitlo] (canvas, oil, 1988, transferred to the Khmelnytskyi Regional Art Museum collection by the Directorate of Art Exhibitions of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine in 1989), which the artist painted during his Poltava period. This proved to be the most prolific era of his career—a time of intense creative experimentation when his studio served as an informal hub of Poltava’s artistic life. One can surmise that in this canvas, the artist captured evening gatherings of like-minded colleagues where they discussed the trajectories of contemporary art and shared creative breakthroughs.
The piece is executed in Markosyan’s signature multi-layered painting technique, furthering the formal explorations of the modernists. Straddling abstract and figurative painting, the stylized composition is tightly structured and harmoniously balanced. Variously shaped color segments interact seamlessly, combining to create the dramatic effect of contrasting evening light.
